How to Inspect the helmet?
Helmets are designed to last long, but even the best can wear headphones, especially if they are not supported. One way to check if your headset has problems is to test it for release. Here are three checks you can try:
Straddle the frame of your bike with your hands firmly apply the brakes. Try rocking forward and backward.
Stand astride the wheel before facing your bike with the wheel wedged between your legs and your hands on the handlebars. Try moving the handlebars back and forth.
Lift the front wheel of ground and strike the tire by hand while listening to the vibrations.
With the bike in a rack, grasp the fork and frame and try to bend fork to see if there is no play in the headset. Lift the front wheel of the ground and turning the handlebars back and forth. If they feel tight and do not move smoothly, you can have the helmet too tight. With the wheels off the ground and the rear wheel higher than the front, the front wheel should swing like a pendulum back and forth freely.
If using one of these procedures, you feel play in the rod, it could mean that you must either modify or replace the helmet.
Here are some other signs of problems headset:
The handlebar and fork rattle when you drive.
The handlebars do not rotate smoothly.
You have difficulty to move in a straight line.
Although helmets do not need to be adjusted very frequently, over time turning all that you do on your bike and all the bumps and jolts of the helmet receives from the road can cause the headset to loosen. If you inspect the headset by following the steps in the previous section and find the release, follow these steps to resolve it.
If adjustments are not mitigate the release or other problems with the headset, you might need revision. Headsets can take much abuse, especially if you ride over difficult terrain in bad weather, if a revision to replace the bearings and packing them into fat cool can go a long way to improve and extend the life of the steering system of your bike.
If you replace a headset with the same model, you will be able to install it yourself in most cases – you will not have to press the cups head-tube under because you can reuse those currently in place. However, if you change hats, you'll need your local bike shop to install it. Tools and special skills and expertise are needed to remove parts helmet from a bike frame and install new ones.
