The Hard Road of Keeping one’s Teeth
Dental problems like diseases will inevitably strike at every single human in their lifetime, only in varying degrees. Gums, jawbone and of course the natural teeth can be adversely affected by bacterial infections like dental caries or tooth decay and periodontal disease, gingivitis or gum disease along with periodontitis also known as pynorhea.
When it comes to the rise of infections and diseases, these three factors must exist a host which is the person, the bacteria which will cause the damage and of course a source of nourishment that will enable the bacteria to thrive and wreak havoc. If there is a factor missing, then the infections will not form. In spite of the formula under the development of dental disease is vastly simple, more factors come into play when the extent and severity of these health problems are in question. Race and ethnicity are two of these health problems.
The NIH recently reported that children 12 to 23 months of age had cavities already, in fact one percent of them. Ironically, 55 percent of kids from 5 to 17 do not have cavities in their permanent teeth and 62 percent of kids from 2 to 9 years of age do not have cavities in their primary dentition. Differences are rare in the cavity problems of children aged 2 to 9 years boys versus girls while more black kids have slightly more cavity problems than white children. Non Hispanic black and white people encounter more cavity problems at this age compared to Mexican Americans.
Fifty five percent of the time, 5 to 17 year old kids do not have any cavities in their teeth and there are also no differences in terms of gender. It was revealed, through further analysis of these subgroups that those who are somewhat more prone to tooth decay are Mexican Americans, less are the blacks while the average of the whole group was that of the probability of the whites to have tooth decay.
There seemed to have differences in the cavity and filling trends when it came to ethnic groups and race as did the population of the children and adolescents. Even as there were very few differences between the genders, there were significant differences in the subgroups that were studied. Both groups, the non Hispanic blacks and Mexican Americans were found to have around a half of the cavity or filling experience which the non Hispanic white people had.
Looking at a general perspective, the Mexican Americans had much fewer cavities compared to their non Hispanic black and white counterparts but they were much more likely to get struck by this. As one ages, there is a greater chance that the root surfaces of his teeth will be more and more exposed to the oral environment. Such is connected to a combination of certain factors along with disease processes and others.
Without regards to race or race ethnicity groups, every one individuals is sure to have one or two of his teeth affected by cavities mainly in the root surfaces. All thanks to modern dental science and practice, the decline in the tooth loss trend has been evident in the several decades that have passed. For individuals beyond the age of 18, survey data showed that 90 percent of these people still had a tooth remaining whereas 30 percent still had every single one of their teeth in their mouths.
Long lasting teeth are the six ones at the lower front part. However, this population, 10 percent of it, had lost all their teeth, and not one was retained. Comparing the upper and lower jaws, there were more missing teeth in the upper and as for the molars, the second and first ones were commonly missing. In general terms, black non Hispanic topped the chart of the highest rate of tooth loss while Mexican Americans had the lowest seat in this ranking.
It was established well that 90 percent or more of the people examined had to go through minor troubles with gum loss or loss of bone support to the teeth while 40 percent in this population suffered from a moderate loss of dentition support. 15 percent had developed severe destruction of the bone support of the teeth. In terms of the severity and frequency of the effect, it has been found that more males have it than females. On the bigger picture, better periodontal health is found in non Hispanic whites than Mexican Americans and non Hispanic blacks.
Constant improvement has been seen in the past few decades when it comes to the overall dental health state of people residing in America and the results of this survey also show that dental health differs in different races and ethnic groups. In spite of such improvements, dental disease still is one of the biggest health problems, but the good thing is that the treatment for this can readily be addressed by the local dental community.
