Capacitive Sensors are Hot Topic Today

From touch screens in cars, touch screens at the bank and on your phone, more and more touchable screens and other devices are coming on the market using capacitive sensors.

 

What is Capacitive Technology?

A capacitive touch screen panel is coated with a thin indium tin oxide material that conducts continuous electrical currents across a sensor- say a touch screen of an iPhone. So it exudes a controlled electronic field in both a vertical and horizontal axis and therefore is capacitive. In order for the capacitive technology to function, it must be touched by something else that also exhibits electricity- like the human body. When a person’s finger touches a capacitive screen, it sends an electric current to then form a mathematical function which signals an action. Then, you suddenly get an image, make a payment or access your GPS system all at your fingertips. But why capacitive touch technology over other forms?

 

Capacitive sensor technology is the pricier cousin on resistive touch technology but capacitive technology delivers a better product. But, resistive touch panels are less expensive and have a shorter lifespan than capacitive panels. Most everyone has used a resistive touch screen panel without knowing it and a huge majority of us have used resistive technology today either with our fingertips or with a stylus pen when buying a shirt at the mall or even a pack of gum at a convenience store.

 

Capacitive technology’s sudden populatiry could be due to Apple’s successful iPhone. The world got hooked on the touch screen technology and manufacturers began looking to capacitive sensor technology more seriously. If consumers would pay for a better product, then it would be worth the investment, This increased manufacturing of capacitive panel makers, making the capacitive panels less expensive then previously priced. Technology sources believe it could soon be the mainstream touch panel model.

 

 

Could The Age Of The Computer Mouse Be Eliminated?

What happens to everyone’s computer mouse if everyone’s computer screen suddenly becomes touchable? All computers, laptops and hand held PDA’s will soon be touchable and therefore eliminate the need for a computer mouse to maneuver a pointer to access controls.

 

Less is more when it comes to developing marketable technologies. For example, the size of new technology is constantly shrinking, minus huge plasma televisions, but cell phones, laptops and portable devices for accessing the internet are all shrinking. People want MP3 players that fit on their ear or in a shirt pocket. People want Blue Tooth head sets and simple and clean technologies. Therefore, eliminating the computer mouse is just another way technology is getting sleeker and smaller and delivering greater performance.

 

Besides all of the time saved using touch screens, there are so many other reasons touch technology is booming:

 

• Reduced paper use, like checks
• Compact and simple
• Eliminating the computer mouse, which removes a lot of chronic injuries
• Efficient
• Instant database storage capabilities
