Some tips for -How to Increase a Mobile Phone Battery Life
Life of a mobile phone battery does’t only depend on the usage of phone but the type of battery. There are various batteries available for mobile phones which are installed in the mobile phone based on the phone’s requirements and features. For example, a hi-end mobile phone with music, camera and Wi-Fi features may require more capacity than a black and white phone with a simple messaging system. NiCd (Nickel Cadmium), NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride), Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) and Li-Polymer (Lithium Polymer) are the various kinds of batteries available for a mobile phone.
While dealing with batteries, one must always keep in mind that no physical damage should be caused to the battery as it may start to leak or the contact plates may get damaged. The contact plates connect the battery to the phone; in order to clean it always use a cotton bud. Also, one must not expose the battery to sun light or keep it in an extremely high temperature. More importantly the battery should not be short circuited which would disassemble the battery’s casing. The NiMH and NiCd batteries are cheaper than Li-Ion batteries but have offer less standby time compared to the latter.
Li-Ion batteries are lighter, smaller and offer more talk time. A new type of batteries using Lithium polymer offers better talk time than Li-Ion, but are still yet to be put into use. Taking the example of a phone you recharge every time it gets discharged by 70%, hence it will forget that a remaining 30% charge is remaining and will switch off when 30% charge remains. This is an irrecoverable damage. Following are a few methods through which one can improve his/her mobile phone battery life:
- Turn your phone off when not in use, when no signal is available or at least 5 minutes for every day. This can effectively reduce heat caused by the battery and hence increase battery life.
- Adjust the brightness to satisfy your eyes’ needs, higher the brightness more the consumption.
- Remove keypad tones that buzz on pressing a key.
- Reduce the backlight time of your phone to keep it minimal. In a basic mobile after making and receiving phone calls it is backlight that takes up the rest of the battery.
- Vibration takes up a huge amount of battery; use it in places like malls that are crowded and the ringtone can’t be heard amidst the noise.
- Switch off the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi receivers when not in use. When kept on it continuously keeps searching for devices and hot spots respectively.
- Animations and screensavers are the next source of battery usage. This eye candy should be put off in order to expect a better battery life.
- In smart phones, stop background applications that are not required.
- Some phones have a battery/power saver mode, turn it on. It is the manufacturer’s default setting to improve battery life.
- Do not charge the phone as and when required, charge at intermittent days for 3 or 4 hours daily.
It is always advisable to carry a spare battery in hand. Every battery has a recharge cycle, for example if the manual mentions “400 recharge cycles”, it can be charged and discharged 400 times. Always use a genuine battery, non-genuine batteries reduce the standby time and cause damages to the phone. See to that the charger used is the charger specified to the phone/battery, can different charger can cause a short circuit or cause the battery to leak or bloat. Finally, when a battery is not going to be used for a week or more, store it in a cool and dry place away from heat and heavy metals. Remember that the battery always keeps discharging, even when not in use.
