How to Choose a Business Mobile Phone
Buying a business mobile phone can be a daunting task. Most of us simply choose a mobile based on the looks rather than function of the device i.e. colour, size, ease of use and probably if we have seen it advertised somewhere.
Choosing your network
One of the most important aspects of buying a mobile is choosing the network you go with. For most business choosing a network is dictated by the package. A large proportion of businesses go direct to the large network providers such as Vodafone, T-mobile and O2. These providers offer free text messaging or a limited amount of free calls per month.
Beware! Nothing is free in life. Many businesses don’t realise that they will pay for these freebies by alternative means. If you go direct to the large networks you will not get the personal timely service you will require. For example, if you need a phone barring or porting you might have to wait days.
So what’s the alternative? The alternative is to go for an independent service provider that has dual service provision licences. Having a two service provision allows these companies to give impartial advice on the network best suited to a client’s requirements. The small independent service providers, such as Airtime Manager, are also able to offer you free aditional services that you would not get from the large network providers.
The Basics Of Buying A Phone
Putting the cosmetics aside, one of the basic important requirements of a phone will be the longevity of the battery. Lithium-ion [Li-ion] batteries last longer, weigh less and offer 10-20% more life than their nickel-metal-hydride [NiMH] counter parts. You obviously want a batter that can last for as long as possible. Aim for a battery that can provide at least 5 hours.
If you frequently travel abroad you might want to consider getting a tri-band GSM [Global System for Mobile Communications] phone. These phones operate on networks in Europe, the USA and Asia [GSM 800/1800/1900].
Many business people carry around a lot of contact details so a phone with a big address memory is always a bonus. Being able to interface with Microsoft outlook on your computer will allow you to download contact details quickly. Owing to advances in SyncML the synchronising between mobile devices and computers is becoming more common place.
Getting Smart
Staying connected to the office whilst on the move is always a real advantage for the business executive. Conference calling on a phone will enable you to participate in a meeting whilst out of the office. As mobile communications advance new technology such as “push to talk” will allow you to use your mobile like a walkie-talkie.
Many phones come with the internet as standard these days. It can allow the business executive to access addresses, product information, maps and much more whilst on the move. The internet access on offer has also made advances by becoming faster. Many GSM phones support GPRS [General Packet Radio Service] which provides always on internet content and data services. This allows multimedia content, web browsing, and email at around 56Kbps.
Now EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Environment) technology is available giving you data transfer over existing GSM networks up to three times faster than GPRS. If you need to maximize you mobile data speed, you’ll need to opt for 3G. At up to 7.2Mbps Vodafone offers the most reliable 3G Network in selected areas.
Another consideration for the business man who spends loads of time out of the office is to look at smart phones such as the BlackBerry. The BlackBerry Enterprise Service integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Exchange and selected Lotus and GroupWise solutions, providing a wireless extension to your existing
desktop email client with real-time over the air synchronisation.
