The Sony Ericsson Satio – the Flagship Smartphone to Beat
Just when the Xperia line is fast becoming a hit, here comes another stunning smartphone from Sony Ericsson, capping its highly illustrious year in the mobile phone market – the Satio. Larger than the Xperia, it’s built as solid as a rock and even at 126 grams, sports a slim elegant body that’s just as pocket-friendly as any. The Sony Ericsson Satio is among the most anticipated smartphone in the company’s 2009 product line-up and is expected to land in European markets by September in the ?1000 price point. Sony Ericsson’s Firsts
This is the company’s first handset to use the Symbian S60 operating system. Rumored to be a tactical decision to get it out to market at the earliest, the Satio benefits from its high versatility as evidenced by a slew of high end functions we take for granted in Symbian smartphones. Sony Ericsson just pushed on a higher plane. It’s also among the first mobile phone to sport a 12-megapixel camera with features found in its Sony’s CyberShot camera. This takes camera phones to it highest resolution to date.
The Satio at a glance:
- In general, the Satio is a quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/2100 MHz, GPRS/EDGE class 10, and high speed HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA 3.6 Mbps for fast surfing and downloading over the internet.
- It’ sports one of biggest screens among smartphones with a 3.5″ VGA (640 x 360 pixels) 24-bit-color TFT touchscreen with an accelerometer for automating portrait or landscape screen orientation with just a tilt of the handset.
- It has a very generous 250MB RAM expandable to 32Gb from its hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 16GB). An 8 GB microSD card is included in its sales kit.
- Its industry-first 12-megapixel cameras has autofocus and touchfocus features as well as xenon flash, geo-tagging, and face and smile shutter activation. As a 3G phone, it has a secondary VGA camera in front.
- Its VGA video recording comes with a video light and goes at a film-grade 30 frames per second – the best in the industry short of High Definition found in the Samsung Omnia.
- Its multimedia features are second to none with stereo FM thrown in.
- High speed data connectivity like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, USB v2.0 are supported, together with GPS navigation,
A Trifling Caveat
While its Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP enables you to use wireless stereo earphones, it’s still disappointing to see a proprietary audio port that only accepts Sony Ericsson earphones. Not that the proprietary earphone sounds bad, in fact, it sounds excellent. But a standard 3.5mm audio output jack found in many flagship phones wouldn’t hurt and could have made the Satio the perfect multimedia handset.
The Last Word
