Remotes and how they work
LEDs are the basic components of the IR (infrared) remote controls, making it one of first applications of LEDs. IR remotes are part of our daily lives, they are the most common solution for TV, DVD or stereo, where the signals do not have to travel long distances. But how it works, and what exactly to do with LED? IR or Infrared light is electromagnetic radiation invisible to the eye. It is because of its wavelength longer than "Visible lights. The basic idea behind the operation is that the IR remote control, containing one or two LED sends a signal – Infrared radiation – decoded by the receiver. The components of a remote control are buttons, an integrated circuit, contacts and DEL key. Once a button is hit, it affects his touch by a certain part of the circuit that allows the release an LED light beam (infrared radiation focused to a beam by a plastic lens). This beam is a set of encoded data, a sequence of activation and deactivation, which is decoded by the receiver by converting infrared radiation to an electrical current. Each button has published a different code, which also depends on the brand device. A major advantage of IR is their easy application and relatively inexpensive. Their short range is often viewed as a disadvantage (You must be near the device in order to use it), but in most applications, it is not necessary to be further – we are generally in front of the TV anyway when we want it to work. Another slight drawback is that they are directional, so the check must be done exactly to the receiver to operate it. This is due to the low light intensity emitted by the remote, and this can easily be improved if the remote control includes two LEDs for signaling. It broadens and strengthens the signal, pointing to not be as punctual. IR remotes also need a line of sight to communicate, so that the signals do not pass not by walls or corners. This can actually be an advantage as well as separate remotes do not interfere with each other in the halls nearby. Infrared light is actually easy to intervene, as sunlight, fluorescent light bulbs and even the human body emits infrared light. They are excluded by filters that block light wavelengths other than the controller.
An alternative solution for Remote Control is the radio frequency or RF remote control that uses radio waves instead of light waves to move signals. The main advantage of RF control is that you do not have to be in the line of sight to operate the application and has also passes through walls, which means you can hide the receiver, eg in a cabinet or behind furniture. Communication also conveys greater distances than an IR remote. On the other hand, this is not the best solution for TV, for example, which can be found in several rooms of a house.
