Six things I love about Google Android 3.0
Android has always frustrated. I followed the mobile operating system Google since its debut on the T-Mobile G1, and time and time again I saw the news releases below the redesign of the interface in a container clean, friendly experience that can compete with – and push – iOS Apple.
Until now: With Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb) Google has decided to raise the plate and hit one out of the park.
Using honeycomb on the shelf Motorola Xoom, I found myself regularly fun, without cursing, experience. It's quite the opposite of how I react to my Samsung S Galaxy Android 2.1 – support that feels downright painful compared to using my Apple iPhone 4.
When it comes to interface design, I value of a specific style and organized, with effective navigation. That means a minimum of taps, and not have to move my fingers and other the entire screen to perform simple tasks. I was a vocal critic of the early Android, the operating system not finished – it was the operating system that has only so far, not far enough to see action until the end, or to carry the nails next level.
But Android 3.0 is more up to it. Honeycomb is the first political interface product I've seen from Google, and the first who does not feel like being a beta at launch. In some cases, it's the little things – like being able to operate anywhere on the screen to dismiss a window menu – that Android 3.0 infinitely more usable.
Here are six things about honeycomb I learned to appreciate as I spent time with the Motorola Xoom. Some of these items to resolve grievances that have long been with Froyo, others are simply interesting additions that bring the operating system to life.
Browsing through Better Tabs
How do I love web browsing improved? Let me count the ways. The tabbed interface is more than what we are accustomed to our PC, and can switch between windows SuperEasy. Not more than its output to a separate screen to choose a thumbnail, just scroll tabs and you can spend Websites in a blink of an eye. (And in theory, you have no limit on the number of open tabs) No more boring menu pop-up for the settings, search, add bookmarks, or display the download manager -. All these functions are directly integrated in the browser.
Easier Text Editing
The previous 2.x Android devices, editing text typo was a nightmare: Android would appear that a large box, on some implementations, focused on the text line to edit. And then you to choose in this text box dialog whether to "select all", "select text", "mute all", "copy All, or (my favorite on some versions) a change in the method "enter" on your keyboard to the Swype.
Now, you select text by holding your finger on one thing and then wait for the bars text selection to appear. You drag the start point and end selected text and choose from the options menu at the top of the screen: select all, cut, copy, or share them via Bluetooth or Gmail. Otherwise, you can hold in one place and one point is selected for you to make changes. Although neither approach is perfect, and although each requires trial and error to get the feel so much pressure to produce the right pop-ups, editing is much more manageable than in the past.
Notifications display
Here is another dramatic improvement of the interface. Tap once, and notifications pop, plus an extended version of updating the status of a line on the bottom of the screen. Clearly visible are the network and battery life (with remainder), not not mention the date and time. Tap again to reveal easy access to the switch to airplane mode, a shortcut parameters Wi-Fi, button lock screen orientation, the facilitator notifications, and brightness controls. You also get a shortcut direct the panel. Overall, the design offers clean, easy access, with a visual presentation. This is a great victory for users.
Improved Native Keyboard
The arrangement of keys and the responsiveness of the keyboard (as implemented on the Xoom) is greatly improved over other implementations. Of course I want it was the size adjustable and a digital line (as in HP is still to be released based WebOS TouchPad), but the keys are better trained and better organized than what I saw on tables using Froyo. Large Backspace and Enter button, a dedicated button on the keyboard com Web browser, even a button to a button for voice input -. My fingers may be on this aircraft.
Widgets: Bringing Data Alive
The current selection is widgets, hopefully only the beginning; widgets open a whole new world of user-friendliness and access to your data. Some of them annoy: To be honest, I could not less care about the most popular / discuss / YouTube videos featured. But the approach flip-book-style finger-friendly and catchy, and I hope we have widgets for, say, the latest updates to your favorite channels on YouTube. Similarly, the approach easy access Flip-Style for books could be superhot if applied to a widget for newspaper and magazine subscriptions, for example. Other widgets preinstalled include those for bookmarks, calendar, contacts, analog clock, e-mail and Gmail, Google, the Android Market, music, and a photo frame.
The thing about widgets is that they are organic feel of the tablet. They can have real-time data updates to date, and you scroll through without first launching a particular application. The push approach – is to have data pushed to you rather than you needing to get data – has always had a special attraction. I just hope that users can obtain more widgets, and more customization around them that matures in a honeycomb. After all, Honeycomb has six screens home to complete.
