My wife and I had undertaken a tour of China and Japan. It was a group tour arranged by Kesri Tours Pvt. Ltd. We were 14 in the group. The travel arrangements made by Kesri were excellent and we were served Indian food through out, even in mainland China.
One of the most memorable parts of the tour was a visit to the Great Wall of China. It was about one and a half hours drive from Beijing. The weather was quite chilly and we were required to wear warm clothes. As we approached the Great Wall of China it had stated to rain and snow.
The moment we set our eyes on the Great Wall, we were all very thrilled as the sight was amazing. The wall was really so great that it was beyond what we had imagined. As our bus approached the Great Wall it loomed above us. The Great Wall of China passes through many mountains and valleys and it goes up and down.
Since the part of the Great Wall of China we were visiting was on a mountain we had to take a cable car to reach the top. We were reminded of the cable car ride to the Raigad fort in Maharashtra, India.
On reaching the top of the Great Wall of China, we walked in either direction. The Wall is solidly built and is still well maintained by the Chinese government. The wall had a number of stairs going up and down. The wall overlooked lush green valleys and mountains and in the drizzle it looked very beautiful. The part of the wall which we visited looked similar to the walls of the mountain forts of Maharashtra.
It was quite chilly at the top with flakes of snow and rain. Some hawkers were selling mementos and other local items. We enjoyed a hot cup of coffee at the top.
By afternoon we commenced our return journey to Beijing.
Even today when I close my eyes and think of the Great Wall of China I can see it in all its magnificence and grandeur and I say to myself that it is rightly one of the seven wonders of the world and the only man made structure visible from the moon.
