Newsletter Publishing As a Home Based Business
Newsletters are just like magazines but not as long. A newsletter is anywhere from one to eight pages in length in an 8.5 x 11 inch format. If you can type, you can create a newsletter.
The primary mission for the newsletter publisher is discovering and satisfying the information needs of their niche. For example, if your newsletter is about dogs, you may want to write about fun places to go and cool stuff to do with your dog. Include information that helps your dog’s health and any information you can dig up about a certain breed of dogs.
When choosing a niche, choose something you know quite a bit about. It’s hard to write about something that you don’t know.
Subscription Newsletters
Earnings from a subscription newsletter come in whole or in part from subscriptions paid by readers. To boost income, some subscription newsletters sell advertising too. Some also sell products and services.
Advertising Supported Newsletters
Advertising supported newsletters are distributed free of charge to readers the advertisers want to reach. For example, a newsletter is produced for a health club and it is entirely supported by advertisers who offer products and services to health conscience people. The publisher must build up a large enough reader list that the publication becomes attractive enough to advertisers to underwrite the publication costs and the publishers fee for writing and distributing the newsletter.
Contracting to Produce Newsletters for Others
Many companies could benefit from having a newsletter but don’t have the time, resources or know-how to publish their own. You can offer to publish one for them. You may write and produce the entire newsletter for your clients, including contracting with the printer and maintaining the mailing list for the distribution of the newsletter. Or you may do whatever portions of the process a client needs.
Creating Newsletters Used by Multiple Clients
You can write a standard monthly newsletter usable by the same type of client, such as accountants, dentists, doctors, veterinarians or insurance agents. Customize the first page with a message from the client and a photograph plus any other custom touches he or she may wish.
Newsletter publishers usually bill clients either a flat fee per issue or charge based on an hourly rate, but either way, each of the services performed should be priced separately.
