How to Save Money on Car Hire
It is normal for people to look for the best deals on airfare when they are planning their vacation. However, not many people know that they can also get good car hire deals by simply shopping around and comparing prices. If you are looking to save money, consider the following:
1. Do Not Take Insurance

Some car hire companies impose hidden charges in their services. They may give you an attractive deal but lace it with other charges, which in the end make renting the car a very expensive affair. For example, you may get a car that is hired at $125 a week. This translates to about $18 a day. However, you may have to pay about $50 more in taxes and other fees.
Before taking a car, find out the exact total amount that the company will expect you to pay when the vehicle will be in your possession.
3. If You Can, Avoid Airport Rentals
Many people go for airport rentals because they are convenient as they are available immediately you alight from the plane. However, these rentals are usually more expensive than those offered by companies in the mainland. While it is convenient to park in the airport, you will pay extra for this convenience.
If you are checking into a hotel, find out whether they offer car rental services. Alternatively, consider using the hotel’s taxi or shuttle services for your movement. This may be cheaper than a car rental.
4. Consider the Type and Size of Car
Car rental charges vary depending on the type and size of car. It is best to book for a compact car before your trip. These cars are cheap to hire and are fuel-efficient. Due to their popularity, you could find they have all been rented out by the time you arrive. In such a case, most companies will offer you an upgrade for free!
However, there are rare times when compacts may still be available. If you feel that you need a bigger vehicle when you arrive, you can pay an upgrade fee at the car hire office.
5. Shop for Deals and Special Offers
Do the math and find out how pricing change with the number of days and well as type of car. For example, a mid-sized rental may cost $236 for 3 days and $361 for 7 days. In such a case, reserving the car for 7 days will be more efficient than taking it for 3 days.
