Aiming at the Emerging Markets With the Nokia 7020
Reminiscent of the Supernova series from Nokia, the 7020 clamshell is a fashion phone that makes use of light, metal, and color to enhance your style points. The Nokia 7020 is a classic clamshell folding phone with a secondary display on the outside that only lights up in response to events like a new call or message. From an aesthetic point of view, this display updates the classic clamshell look with a combination of lights, colors, and metallic accents. Central to the design ethos is the outside secondary display’s animated stardust effects which respond in various interesting ways to user actions. Complimenting to the fashionable good-looks and sense of style of this phone is the on-board accelerometer which allows for tap control of the phone and its functions. For example, simple taps on the secondary screen can disable an alarm, mute the ringer, or reject incoming calls. Available color schemes for the 7020 are the attractive options of graphite, hot pink, silver, and blue.
While not a smartphone, the Nokia 7020 is more than just a basic cell phone, in line with Nokia’s stated long-term strategy of differentiating itself from its rivals, particularly in the developing market, by offering some smartphone-like functionality with basic cell phone user-friendliness and affordability. Meant as an entry-level all-round communications device, the Nokia 7020′s feature-set is fairly sparse, however, when compared against other such basic but smartphone-like cell phones from the company. The standard two-megapixel camera will probably be outdated soon enough, but does allow video calling in QVGA resolutions at a decent 30 fps. Its 2.2 inches of TFT screen real estate provide 240×320 pixels for a palette of 16 million colors. FM radio and portable music functionality are industry-standard, with .mp3 playback of up to twenty hours, and because the tuner and player are integrated, users can share their collection over the airwaves, wirelessly.
Rounding out the feature-set are microUSB connectivity, Bluetooth 2.1 compatibility, and microSD expansion capacities of up to 16GB. Internet accessibility is also offered, which means additional games and apps can be downloaded. The 7020 operates over GSM 850/900/1800/1900. Official talk time is listed as four and-a-half hours, while standby can be up to over two weeks. The retail box includes the phone, its battery and charger, and a wired stereo headset (in the old 2.5mm non-standard format). All very entry-level, to be sure, but considering the projected price-point at which the Nokia 7020 is to be offered, the package is also a fair if average deal for the casual average user.
