With the music still dominating the mobile phone market, here are three phones to get you into the music spirit. The Apple iPhone 3G is, as you might expect the talk of town at the moment, however at its core it is still a music handset that allows you to take your tunes with you wherever you go. Forget its failings at email, video recording or MMS the reason most are buying this handset is for the music.
The iPhone gives you full music functionality just like the iPod with the added benefit of syncing your handset to your iTunes library. If that wasn’t enough Apple also allow you to buy your tunes over a Wi-Fi connection from the iTunes library as well. There is even a 3.5mm jack for your headphone and unlike the original iPhone you won’t need a specially designed iPhone suitable set of headphones either.
The Motorola Rokr E8 boasts a slick design, with the face being entirely touch-esque, supported by haptics, so you will find no hard buttons. To support the music focus, you will find 2GB of onboard storage which, whilst not terribly exciting, competes with your average entry level MP3 player. You do, however, get a microSD expansion slot and a dedicated 3.5mm jack on the top of the phone.
The bundled headset also functions as the aerial for the FM radio and the handsfree mic. In terms of music, despite the music player launch button hiding on the front, the player is fairly intuitive, and there is a speaker lurking on the bottom of the handset, which does not sound too bad, so if you plan to broadcast your music on the back of the bus, then you will at least get better quality here than in other models.
The Sony Ericsson W380i sits at the budget end of the Walkman range and offers a set of basic, but adequate, features to get your music on the go in the guise of a mobile phone. Of course, the W380 being a music phone from Sony Ericsson, you do not get a 3.5mm headphone socket but instead have to rely on the Sony Ericsson dongle and rather than opt for on-board memory you get a 512MB M2 card in the box which means you can expand it further down the line.
As a basic Walkman handset the W380 throws no punches and therefore is unlikely to offend. You basically get what you get, a music-focused phone for the masses that delivers nothing out of the ordinary. The music features in phones continue to influence consumers and dominate the market.
