How to Choose a Condenser Microphone
The type of condenser microphone that you choose should be decided by its application – Live or Studio. Beyond that, trying out as many different microphones as you can to find the one most suited to your voice and style of music is the best way to find the best vocal microphone for you.
Live Vocal Microphones
A live vocal microphone needs to have a good sound quality, be rugged enough to get knocked around on stage, survive episodes of feedback and perform consistently in any environment.
Dynamic microphones are a relatively simple design of microphone and fit this description perfectly. They are relatively inexpensive and are the most widely used microphone for live vocals.
Studio Vocal Microphones
A studio microphone needs to have excellent sound quality, but doesn’t need to be rugged in the same way that a live microphone does. Condenser microphones are much more sensitive than dynamic microphones; however the relatively safe studio environment suits them perfectly.
Of course there are occasions where dynamic microphones can be used in the studio and where condenser microphones can be used on stage, however for the reasons outlined above; there are good reasons why most people use them in their more typical environments.

Since the first true microphones were used in the early telephone transmitters, they have advanced and developed such that nowadays there is a bewildering variety available. The basic microphone consists of a sensor arrangement that somehow converts acoustic signals to a proportional electrical signal. The electrical signal can then be amplified, manipulated and either transmitted or recorded.
The early models usually consisted of a paper cone and an electrical coil that passes through a magnetic field – much in the same way as a hi-fi loudspeaker is constructed even to this day. Serious stage microphones are usually still made using this method, known as a dynamic microphone. It was not long, however before alternative, smaller methods were found to capture sound electrically. Some of the other main types of microphone currently available are as follows:
The condenser microphone. This uses two plates, arranged as in a capacitor, with one of the plates being vibrated by the sound waves, altering the capacitance of the plates as the gap varies and causing a proportional change in voltage across the microphone which can be used.
Electret microphone. Similar in principle to a condenser microphone, the capacitance plates are made of electrically charged polymers. This means that no actual power is used to generate the signal. Almost all cheap ones such as those in mobile phones and PC headsets are of this type.
