The best type of headphones for the noise passive variety are reduced circum-aural because they are constructed to maximize noise filtering. They consist of layers of high density foam (Or similar material) which makes them heavier than the normal headphones. But they can reduce noise by about 15 to 20 decibels.
A better option would be to cancel the noise variety Active. They work by setting aside the lower frequency sound waves. A small microphone placed inside cup ear listening to the sounds of the outside world and a circuit inside the helmet creates a sound wave that is 180 degrees out of phase with the incoming sound. This "anti's" is introduced in the helmet speakers with normal sound. Erases the noise noise, but does not affect the sound waves normal audio. The power required to do so, requires the use of a rechargeable battery inside the earmuffs.
Active noise-canceling headphones can block about 70 percent of ambient noise.
Make sure you read the comments when looking to buy ear protection. brands have very short battery life and did not really reduce unwanted noise much at all. Higher priced models do not mean necessarily mean you get better quality noise canceling properties either.
Some people say that quality noise canceling headphones compromised by noise muffle sound. They can also take some getting used to so that the user can see a change in pressure air even if the air is supposed to be discharged through the ports of the atria.
