Digital photo printing sizes on paper – and other 4xd 5xd
When you print your digital photos on traditional paper sizes photos are cropped or areas of the paper are left blank. The reason is that tradition paper sizes were designed for film and have different aspect ratio that of digital photos. Digital paper sizes solve this problem and are offered by many – here's how.
Understand aspect ratio
Before you can understand why digital paper sizes are different from those of traditional you need to understand This aspect ratio is. The proportions are the relationship between the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the photo. It can also be applied to video, paint or a rectangle in two dimensions. What aspect ratio should not do with paper sizes?
The pictures are printed on paper has a width and height and aspect ratio. When a photo is printed the aspect ratio of the paper should be equal to the aspect ratio the picture (or in fact the sensor that the photo was taken with). If the aspect ratio is different, the results could be: an empty space left on paper, a cropped photo or a picture which is stretched paper but distorts the objects it contains.

Printing with formatting paper tradition
Common traditional paper sizes are 4×6, 5×7, 8×11 and more. Take for example 4X6 which is the format of the most common photo paper. Traditional film has an aspect ratio of 3:2 and thus 4X6 paper was perfect for prints. Digital cameras however use sensor with different formats of traditional film. So what happens if we try to print digital photos using the traditional paper formats? The picture does not fit. It will be either too wide or too high. For example, if we are printing on a 4X6 paper we fill 4X5.33 and 0.66 inches will be left blank. Many printing services allow the user to crop a part of the photo before printing. This allows the user to cut part of the photo and the rest were printed on the size instead of leaving a part white paper.
