Sony VAIO FW139E / H User Review
The Sony VAIO VGP-BPS8 FW139E / H is a 16.4 "Semi-desktop replacement notebook configured with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400, which runs at 2.26 GHz with a FSB speed of 1066 MHz 3 GB DDR2-800 RAM, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 dedicated graphics card and a 250GB hard drive. This model is one of the first VAIO FW models to come out and is to be sold in retail stores.
Reasons for purchase
This notebook was primarily purchased as a PC to take to university. Now, when you think college, you're probably thinking of portability. Be a major engineering, portability comes second to power. This notebook was designed to provide a maximum of four years of casual computing and heavy. The GPU was the important decision, I needed something dedicated, and the market was flooded with possibly defective NVIDIA GPUs. I narrowed my choices down to the VAIO FW and HP dv5t. I ended up going with the VAIO FW because of the larger screen and faster in my price range.
Where and How Purchased
The VAIO FW139E / H was purchased at NewEgg.com for about $ 995. It was the best case I could find, because the model comes with 3 GB of RAM and retail Radeon GPU already included in the price and it was available earlier. I think that's a fair deal because a similar Centrino 2 model would have been almost $ 200 more at the time.
Building Design
I am impressed by the construction of network VAIOFW. It is cased in a magnesium alloy, which makes it look semi-metal and semi-plastic at the same time. This is a very solid laptop to research, the screen is perfect and the hinge is strong, rubber feet under the laptop keep it from moving, and I have not been able to make a scratch on it. Rational design, it is fashionable sound. He wears the traditional light VAIO, the model I reviewed the model titanium gray with black colored keys. It has a very professional look.
The power button is located on the right side of the hinge and glows green when turned on and orange when hibernating. The media buttons are located on the right side just above the keyboard. The speakers are top of the keyboard as well. The key to computer laptop stand out as well. The black keys are spaced notebook VGP-bps8a look very sharp to the eye. The "Motion Eye" camera is located just above the screen.
Screen
The screen on this model the VAIO FW is an XBRITE-ECO LCD with a native resolution of 1600 x 900. This is not just a single screen size to 16.4 inches, but it has a unique 16:9 aspect ratio. This aspect ratio is the true widescreen aspect ratio that HDTVs feature. This size is perfect for true wide managing windows while multitasking. You can have about four or five average sized applications on screen comfortably in kindergarten resolution. The screen is a little on the bright side, but there are no reflections when there the laptop is on. When off, it doubles as a tinted mirror.
Speakers
The built-in speakers above the keyboard are of average quality. You can definitely tell the difference between the speakers of the VAIO FW's speakers and external resources.
Headphones are a must if you want to watch a movie or listening to music. I would not recommend portable speakers as a replacement, the sound quality would be equal to that of VAIOFW. I was not expecting much from speakers, though. Speakers are not the highlights of laptops, anyway.
Processor and Performance
Now for the fun part! The Core 2 Duo P8400 is remarkably fast in Vista, I have yet to experience a slowdown caused by the CPU. The bottlenecking component of this laptop is the hard disk, running the average laptop HDD speed of 5400 rpm. Transfer a large file on a 100 Mbit / s was pretty slow, which was not the fault of the laptop hard drive, though. The device is capable of 1000Mbps transfers, and the file contained a large amount of subdirectories and files and slow transfer in Windows. Start is fast, even when multiple startup applications are present.
Gaming wise, this laptop is great for games of last generation. It plays Halo: Combat Evolved at native resolution and everything turned on perfectly. It also plays
Half-Life 2 with almost all parameters High (AA disabled) on the native resolution.

Heat and noise
This laptops well built to handle heat. After playing for about 30 minutes, the laptop was still fresh. It is not very hot to all, and is probably one of the very good things about Sony's engineering. When not playing a disc, this laptop is silent as if this is about. When he reads a disk, however, it is very hard for a short 3 to 5 seconds. The fans are fairly silent when gaming, too. Heat and noise wise, it is very well designed machine.
Keyboard and touchpad
The spaced keys on the Sony VAIO FW are fairly comfortable with the type. The keys are well built and they do not stick or have flaws in them. For serious players, I would not recommend not using the keyboard, however. After playing first person shooters on a real desktop keyboard, playing keyboards on the VAIO FW is (or perhaps any laptop keyboard in general) are difficult to adjust. But all the serious players would not be playing on a laptop, anyway.
The touchpad is average, it feels much smoother than other keyboards, but that's all. I can not say much about it that almost all laptops now feature similar touch technology. The user is able to change basic properties of the touchpad, button selection from the double click speed.
Ports of entry and exit
I / O wise, this laptop has an ExpressCard slot, three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire (dubbed i-Link by Sony), VGA output, HDMI output, a headphone and microphone jack. It also features a Pro MagicGate memory card reader. The I / O ports are pretty standard in all new laptops, one thing to note is that an HDMI output is also technically a DVI output as well. HDMI to DVI cable can allow easy output to a DVI monitor if you do not like using VGA.
Wireless
The VAIO FW is delivered with Atheros wireless card that can access b, g and n type wireless networks. It also comes with Bluetooth wireless connectivity to peripherals. Wireless can be turned on and off by simply using a switch located on the lower left of the computer Cell.
Battery
The battery life is just, I keep the laptop on full brightness without charge and it usually lasts about 2 hours. The laptop downclocks the processor when there is no external power source to conserve energy. The P8400 processor should be saving about 10 Watts thanks to Intel Core 2 Duo P **** models, which operate using 25W instead of 35W.
Operating system and software laptop battery
The VAIO FW is delivered Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (Sony OEM). It came with any amount of bloatware, but I managed to uninstall what I did not need. Among some of the bloatware, there were applications I found useful: recovery software backup Sony's Windows Live OneCare, a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office, and VAIO Content Exporter. The backup software allowed me to make recovery disks easily, and VAIO Content Exporter converts video file formats.
When I had originally obtained the VAIO, I planned to do a fresh install of Vista. However, I was not able to do with what was provided, so I had to find another route than recovery disks. The use a Anytime Upgrade Vista disk that is sold separately, I tried a new installation. Everything worked until the time is come for the pilots, one pilot told me he can not install on Windows Vista. I do not understand that I was running Vista, and decided call Sony …
Customer Support
Can not install drivers properly, I contacted the support Sony. They informed me that the user is unable to properly use the VAIO without OEM Vista, because the driver recognizes only version OEM Vista. A little disappointed, I had to reinstall again using the recovery disks and once again manually uninstall the bloatware.
Apart from the disappointment OS, Customer Support Sony was the most knowledgeable I have talked, they knew exactly what I mean, it has not been outsourced, and were quick to identify the driver prerequisites.
Conclusion
The Sony VAIO FW139E / H is a good buy for me. The design, construction, and the price were right, and I'm happy with the purchase. It is more than sufficient for all engineering applications I use CAD for undergraduate studies, and is ideal for multitasking and mild gaming.
The VAIO FW CPU and FSB speed, 3GB of RAM, and Radeon GPU are a wonderful combo for mobile power. The aspect ratio of the screen is perfect for entertaining. The build quality is fantastic, Sony does not provide anything other than their best in hardware.
The downside is insignificant. For someone who seeks the battery life, being able to play the last game on High settings, or good sound reproduction, not the laptop, they should be addressed.
This laptop is great for the power user who still wants fresh portability. Of course, my vision portability probably differs from someone who is 6.4 pounds heavier. There's nothing like the great VAIO AR, however. The VAIO FW is an FZ in size, and Halfway between FZ and AR in power.
