Classic Dan Dare: Voyage to Venus Part One

For a man or woman of a certain age, the name of "Dan Dare" can still inspire kind of melancholic nostalgia for a bygone era of comic science fiction, where the good guys wore white, the bad guys in black, and the world place was a fucking simple. It was so joyful news for many of us so damned geek cult in 2004 when rated excellent editor, Titan Books, has announced the reissue of a long line of Dan Dare adventure from the 1950s onwards.

There were lots of adventures Dare in the wonderful technicolor glory, bound in beautiful, hardcover themed covers. And what a joy it was – and is. While many of his contemporaries were wrong Dare old star old captain still managed to stand up to the youngest on the block. Partly, perhaps largely, this is due to the superb color illustrations by Frank Hampson. It really does sing off the pages and makes all the adventures take life the way few others have managed this time to do so. Ok, maybe the stories have not aged well. The dialogue is clunky, the characters are one-dimensional (or worse, stereotypes racial or national) and scenarios are often not bricks either. Yet, throughout the adventures, will retain the attention of his, the work Art is such a sumptuous simply poured on it and the ideas so retro-kitsch to be simply engaging. The frequent anachronisms and non-PC attitudes or declarations are easily forgiven, because in truth, the best in comics, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

If you like old style Sci-Fi, and old comic style (and the Mekong!), Then the series "Classic Dan Dare 'is for you. Choose carefully for some are better than others. But it is mainly the work of art, collections and beautifully bound and presented to Titan that make this series worth a serious collector – or a fan. They are simply beautiful and make your library LOOK proud.

Personally, I'm waiting for the adventures of Dan Dare revived in the 1970s and the days of Starlord and 2000AD. And if you remember Starlord then you belong to a club very exclusive indeed!
